Effect of streptomycin resistance of host bacteria on various phage properties

Abstract
The author has investigated, using the Klebsiella phage-host bacteria system, the various phenomena resulted from phage multiplication in streptomycin(SM)¢¥ resistant bacteria. The following results were obtained.
The phage adsorption rate to the live cell or heat extracted-bacterial substance of SM resistant bacteria was a little higher grade than that to those of normal bacteria.
The efficiency of plating of normal and SM resistant bacteria-passed phageon various SM resistant bacteria was similar to that on normal bacteria.
The phage growth in SM resistant bacteria was worse than that in normal bacteria. The growth of SM resistant bacteria-passed phage in SM resistant bacteria was a little more vigorous than that in normal bacteria.
If the SM resistance of host cell is lower grade, the appearance of phage plaque was similar to that in normal bacteria. The plaque, however, formed in the cells of higher grade-SM resistance was larger and clearer and the appearance was completely different from that formed in normal cell. And also, the plaque halo in SM resistant bacteria was much reduced.
The capsular polysaccharides of normal and SM resistant bacteria did not show any influence to the phage activity.
The antigenicity of SM resistant bacteria-passed phage was considerably different from that of normal phage.
